The Grid System Game!

Talking about the Grid system for the video game. I think most of the strategy games are using the grid system to arrange the avatar’s movement and attacking range.

Strategy game is one of my favorite genres. NECTARIS, developed by Hudson Soft for the PC-Engine platform and released at 1989, is the first strategy game that I like. They use Hex instead of Square as a grid system.

The reason I fascinated in this game is because I need to use the new way to think about how to win in the game. Besides the effect of topography, you can use either “Surround” to distract the enemy’s strength of attack and defense or use “Support” to increase your troop’s attack and defense ability. With those tactics, you can beat off the strong enemy with cheap troop unit.
After surrounding he enemy, even the enemy’s (the green one) experience is better then me, I got the higher attack and defense power.

  • Download the TGemu (a free PC-Engine emulator for Mac OS X)
  • Download the NECTARIS Rom from somewhere

  • Another strategy game that I like is “Front Mission”, which developed by SQUARE Soft in 1995. The “Front Mission” is a series of games. It starting from Super NES platform and they released the “Front Mission 5— Scars of the War” for the PS2 at 2006. This is a fantastic robot war game. You can buy the parts and the weapons for your robots. Recruit the pilot you need according their own special skill. The greatest part of this game is you can attack one enemy at the same time with multiple robots by arranging the tactics with “Link” function. I highly recommend this game to everyone who like the SLG.
